COLEMAN'S ANTIBIOTIC AND HORMONE POLICY

The purpose of this outline is to assist the cattle feeder in producing wholesome beef, free from antibiotics and without the assistance of supplemental hormones.

Antibiotics or ingredients containing possible antibiotic residues are not to be fed to cattle entering the Coleman Natural Program.  Some of the antibiotics commonly fed to cattle include, but are not limited to*: Chlortetracycline, Oxytetracycline, Tylan, Bacitracin, Neomycin, Bambermycin (Gainpro) and Virginiamycin (V Max).  The antibiotic ionophores are also included in this classification.  They include Monensin (Rumensin), Lasalocid (Bovatec) and Laidlomycin (Cattlyst).  Other ionophores awaiting FDA approval will be included in the antibiotic classification.*

Growth promoting hormones cannot be used in the feed or via implant.  This includes Melengestrol Acetate (MGA), which is fed.  Implants include, but are not limited to: Synovex C, Synovex S, Synovex H, Synovex Plus, Compudose, Ralgro, Ralgro Magnum, Finaplex S, Finaplex H, Revalor S, Revalor H, and generic compounds of the above.

Steroids cannot be used as implants or as therapeutic treatment to any ailments.

Since antibiotics such as Rumensin cannot be fed, it is recommended that the roughage level of the ration be increased.  This will reduce digestive problems as well as decrease the incidence of liver abscesses.  The roughage level recommended is twelve to fourteen percent chopped alfalfa hay or its equivalent.  Cattle can be fed lower levels of roughage during summer feeding conditions.
